a place for robotic enthusiasts, builders and user groups
I volunteer with 4-H and we are looking at robotics kits this year. We have tried Lego Mindstorms, while the kits were very good they do require a great deal of leader help to make the robotics work.
Can anyone recommend OLLO Explorer and Inventor Kits for our age group. Also, is the extra cost of the OLLO Inventor worth the higher price, or can we expect to get a lot out of our Explorer kits? Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

We are selling and teaching with OLLO kits for quite some time now and we, the students and the teachers really like it. The programming is not as easy as the Mindstorms programming, but easy enough for a kid to learn. I don't know in what part of the world you live, but in Canada the Explorer kit is almost to much for 8 year olds unless they are really intelligent geeks. I would rather go for the OLLO Starter Kits for kids ages 8 to 10. They come with a Book for 12 weeks, teaching angles, power etc. so kids slowly get into understanding why things move...
For Ages 10 and up, the Explorer kit is an excellent choice. It comes with 3 books also for 12 weeks and if your kids are really smart, you can always upgrade to the Inventor kit with the Inventor Expansion Set.
The cool thing is, that the OLLO kits all have the same controller and you don't have to stick with the book. Once your students get more experienced, you can give them other and bigger projects, while adding more or different modules on the robots. Most of the OLLO parts and electronics can also be bought separately.
As a Guideline I would say:
Years 6 - 8: OLLO Action Kit
Years 8 - 10: OLLO Starter Kit
Years 10 - 13: OLLO Explorer Kit/OLLO Bug Kit
Years 13 - 15: OLLO Inventor Kit
Hope that helps.
